I think both the BBC version and the one with Anthony Hopkins are worth watching. If you like strict biography, the Joss Ackland's portrayal is the most accurate and is very close to Brian Sibley's biography Through the Shadowlands-- be sure to read it for a great acccount of Lewis' marraige to Joy Davidman. Hopkins, however, is also very good at capturing the personality of Lewis. This is the strength of the other film-- even if every historical detail is not the way it really happened.

Douglas Gresham said he thought the portrayal of his mother, Joy, in Shadowlands was perfect. But he didn't like how they did CS Lewis.

A film like "Shadowlands" is a painting rather than a photograph. It is not just about accuracy but also about art and the artists. I very much liked this film, but then I didn't know the man or read the book first.

As small and distorted as this window into the life of C. S. Lewis may be it is the only window I have, so I am afraid the name C. S. Lewis and the face of Anthony Hopkins is now permanently associated in my mind.
