Hello, RN, and welcome! :)

That story sounds like nothing that I have ever read or heard of Lewis's conversion. If you read his autobiographical Surprised by Joy, and some of the other biographies, you will get a much more accurate idea of how he journeyed from atheism to Christianity.
"What are you laughing at?"
"At myself. My little puny self," said Phillipa.

Having read quite a lot of Lewis Biography I certainly don't remember reading that Lewis or a friend used to write scathing "editorials" against Christianity.

As Leslie says, "Surprised By Joy" is an autographical account of Jack's conversion and in fact his only autobiography. It is a very limited autobiography however and if you wanted to learn more about Lewis and his life you would be better reading one of the many biographies which are around.

…on a night of rain Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water. And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a fair green country under a swift sunrise.
