C.S. Lewis was unique, but the author that resembled him the most was probably George MacDonald. He imitated MacDonald and was the first to acknowledge the debt he owed him for revealing much of the Christian faith to him. MacDonald had as much depth and thoughtfulness, though perhaps Lewis had more simplicity and his writing was almost flawless, according to those who evaluated his style and scholarship. MacDonald would sometimes digress into lengthy sermons, whereas Lewis could say something similar in fewer words. But their philosophies were almost identical on many Christians morals and ideas. You would almost think they could have written each other's books-- except that Lewis was better writer and McDonald was a "supreme" preacher, as Lewis put it. I think At the Back of the North Wind and Phantastes compare well with the best of Lewis' fantasy.
