Thank you for your post. I kind of hope it was the case that Lewis's friends did not attend the funeral because they had not been told rather than because of any lack of friendship. Poor Warnie, and a few years later he didn't attend Lewis's funeral - he couldn't bear to.
About Tolkien: I have read that his marriage had its ups and downs, but I don't know that it was generally unhappy. As I have understood the matter, it was the case that the downs took place at particular times, if you see what I mean. However, I am open to correction on this.
Also, I am not aware that Tolkien was not in favour of marriage. I think he upheld it. In Tolkien's Letters, there is one which he wrote to one of his sons on the subject of marriage. I shall dig that out tonight and see what he says.
