How tall was C. S. Lewis?

Postby Sven » October 30th, 2005, 6:43 pm

A question that has been asked by visitors here on several occasions over the last few years is "How tall was C. S. Lewis?". We've never been able to provide a good answer. Colin Duriez has published a new biography/timeline, with the information. According to Lewis' 1917 induction physical into the Royal Army Officer Training Corps, Lewis was 5' 10 3/4" and weighed 13 stone (about 180 pounds).

Duriez's new book is titled The C.S. Lewis Chronicles. It's a fairly interesting read, goes through Lewis' life year-by-year, listing important events in his life as well as in the world at large.

Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
Then the two animals, crouching to the earth, bowed their heads and did worship.

Interesting. I can't say that I ever really wondered or cared how tall Lewis was, but that is interesting to know. One can now imagine oneself standing next to Lewis knowing how tall he would be.
