A lovely article and a wonderful rebuke of Pullman's bitter diatribe against Lewis and all things Christian.

In our school, on a wall, there is a big writing, saying «I care». It is the untranslatable motto of the best among young Americans. It means: «I AM interested in it; it is dear to me». That's the exact opposite of the fascist motto, «I don't care». (Lorenzo Milani, priest. Lettera ai giudici; 1965)

I just find it endlessy funny, in a horrible, disgusting sort of way, that Pullman actually refers to the writings of Lewis as propaganda.

If anybody's ugly, hateful, life hating and poisonous, I'm thinking Pullman's got to be the one. Not to mention a contemptuous bigot, but now I'm just feeling mean and contemptuous myself.

What's he so scared of, one must wonder? Did Narnia stir something in him that he wants dead so badly?

Or is he, indeed, simply trying to capitalize?

The really amazing thing is how much weight has been given to Pullman's educated opinions by so many... His trilogy is interesting and decently written, but everything he glorifies so much in word just seems so bleak and pointless and bitter. Just left an ill feeling of... emptiness.

Fantastic article. I've read Pullman and I'm sad that such talent (because his books are, frankly, brilliant - though not on a level with Lewis at all) is being misused so terribly.

I'm a little shocked at how harsh he is in his criticism of Narnia. For someone to react so strongly to children's books makes you think he must have some other motive. However, the gentleman who wrote that article defended Lewis extremely well - not that he should have to. Pullman's charges are utterly ridiculous. No love? LWW is the story of ultimate love!
