Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
Then the two animals, crouching to the earth, bowed their heads and did worship.

Simmo, I'd suggest either the Sayer or the Green & Hooper biographies.

If you can find any of them, there are four books that collect essays by people who knew Lewis and talk about their personal experiences. Any of them are splendid reads in addition to a good bio. Those books, their editors, and examples of their contributors are:

In Search of C. S. Lewis Stephen Schofield (includes Jill Freud)
C. S. Lewis at the Breakfast Table James Como (includes six of Lewis' students)
We Remember C. S. Lewis David Graham (includes Fred Paxford aka 'Puddleglum')
C. S. Lewis Speaker and Teacher Carolyn Keefe (includes Owen Barfield)
Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking.
