Regarding Lewis' occasional obsession with related subjects, I refer once again to Andrew Rilstone's light-hearted but well-researched little essay .

Then they came for the Iraqis and I protested because I was an American. Then they came for the Muslims and I spoke out because I was a Christian, Then they came for the poor and I spoke out because I was rich. By the time they came for me, I had all the support a man could ask for.”

I tend to think it was just a figure of speech .. digestive health is often used as as a metaphor for physical and mental harmony in general.

Read the essay I linked anyway if you haven't already, jo. I'm pretty sure you'll get a chuckle out of it. :)

Thankyou all. Yes, I suppose it could be a mixture of his own digestive problems, and using digestion as a general term meaning all minor physical ailments.
God Bless.

Oh my goodness...this is an old thread, and I have absolutely nothing useful to contribute to the conversation, but I just have to thank Theo for the Rilstone article. I am still in the middle of reading it and can barely see to type as I am laughing so hard! Too funny.
