heh, I see the advertising slogan Carol referred to over the entrance the baby is falling down towards:

Drunk for a Penny
Dead drunk for two pence
Clean straw for Nothing.

After much skullduggery on how to get the image here, I post "Beer Street."



Notice how prosperous, neat, and orderly the people are. The only buildings falling down (in contrast to Gin Lane) is the Pawnbroker's. The only poor person is the artist painting the sign (notice his ragged clothing). Most of the men are rather portly from drinking beer. Food and books, the fruits of money, are all around. In the background is the King, being carried in a litter, the source of all this prosperity.

It's a serious mental condition. Some people inherit it; they can't drink socially, or at all, even a glass of wine at dinner or the like, without losing control and getting passed-out drunk. (Usually)

But he didn't have that... he just liked his drink. A lot of people do, actually...
