Just wanted to say that English real ale ranges from about 3.5% to about 6% but its usually measured in specific gravity ie 1035 to 1060. At 1060 a beers is sweet rather than bitter, above that the taste starts to get sour. Some modern ciders come in at about 8%. But Lewis was drinking bitter so way down the low end. Surely he would have drunk other things. I do remember a few whwn Lewis was drunk stories but have difficulty locating them
