Ever understood something Lewis doesn't?

Well, in America, the Puritans pretty much set the tone for the future here. In the begining, the Native Americans were rather amicably disposed toward them until they realized what a bunch of incredibly distructive, intrusive pests Europeans were. By then, it was too late - no amount of hostility would get rid of them.

There are two Britains (according to Lewis). Britain and Logres. There are also two Americas. America proper practically personifies the idea that nature is the enemy and something to be conquered and crushed into servitude. But there are some of us that actually love God's creation and are often driven to Distraction (I think that's somewhere near Abilene) by the "other" America. That Hideous Strength is certainly alive and well here.

…on a night of rain Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water. And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a fair green country under a swift sunrise.
