LOL @ "Once you begin learning foreign languages"

What a peculiar comment. Why assume that I don't speak foreign languages?

I have learned French and German as well as a little Italian and Latin (a tiny bit), essential for music.

But I don't intend ever to read the Bible in the original language - why should I? Any more than (probably) you would sit and read the Qu'ran in its original language.

Okay, a brief thought on the original question of this thread. I'll let you guys hash out the other stuff, I don't think I have the energy.

Think of the original quote. He sited it as necessity, not propriety. Without getting graphic, think of the act we're talking about itself and how the role of the woman differs from that of the man. There is a certain amount of submission required, or at least permission. You essentially can't force a man to do that (in the normal way), but you can force a woman. Therefore, for her to do that willing, she does have to submit, even if she's in control, if you will. She has to allow that to happen, however it's done. I think that may be what he means by necessity.

…on a night of rain Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water. And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a fair green country under a swift sunrise.
