Lewis and the beatles?!

The man. The myth.

Lewis and the beatles?!

Postby jo » September 14th, 2006, 4:33 pm

Maybe a strange question, but Lewis died at a time when rock n roll was very much in the ascendency. Did he ever speak about it? It's hard to imagine him being a fan but I could be totally wrong there! In 63 the Beatles had already become internationally famous hadn't they? (?). Was he ever heard to express an opinion or even tap his foot to them?

You'll have to ask him one day!

The only music I remember Jack liking was Wagner.

“First they came for Abdul Rahman and I spoke out because I was a Muslim. Then they came for the Palestinians and I raised hell because I was a Jew. Then they came for the Iraqis and I protested because I was an American. Then they came for the Muslims and I spoke out because I was a Christian, Then they came for the poor and I spoke out because I was rich. By the time they came for me, I had all the support a man could ask for.”

Hooper's biography (which I by no means recommend as reliable) says that Lewis never lost his admiration for Wagner, but was dissapointed in a performance of The Ring which he saw at Covent Garden.

I seem to recall something from later in his life (perhaps a letter) where he said he didn't like Wagner much anymore (and I was pleased that he had come to his senses  ).

Where oh where is Sven when you need him??

One wonders if maybe his brother Warnie might have had some thoughts on the Beatles though, since he lived longer. (isn't it ironic that the alcoholic one lived the longest)

--Stanley
…on a night of rain Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water. And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a fair green country under a swift sunrise.
