Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
Then the two animals, crouching to the earth, bowed their heads and did worship.

"Religion and Rocketry" in The World's Last Night and Other Essays has a great quote: "What we do when we encounter a less technologically sophsiticated race the black and man and the red man can tell you." Lewis had a low opinion of colonialism and its inherent racism. In his science fiction book this belief is very apparent as a theme.
The way, the weather, the terrain, the discipline, the leadership. --Sun Tzu
