Lewis and pub food!

Lewis and pub food!

Postby jo » January 30th, 2007, 6:44 pm

Okay this is just a lighthearted question but I was having a discussion with someone about the bird and baby the other day and we were speculating whether they served traditional British pub grub back in Lewis's day and if so, whether he and his fellow Inklings liked it :). Does he say anywhere? Was he partial to steak and ale pie and crinkly chips with his pint of bitter? Did all the Inklings meet for lunch together and eat pub meals?

I had read somewhere that when the Inklings were going to the Bird and Baby that it was just a pub with not much to offer in ways of food. As time progressed, food was introduced and the amount of customers who would come in began to increase. Lewis wasn't happy with the way the atmosphere had changed so he switched from the Eagle and Child to the Lamb and Flag right across the street.

By the way, when I visited the lamb, I ran into Reepicheep

Don't know about the Bird n' Baby but I seem to remember that he liked pub grub (and the odd jar  ) when he was out walking.

Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
Then the two animals, crouching to the earth, bowed their heads and did worship.

Ah bread and cheese, the perfect basis for a ploughman's :). Narnian food, really.
