The man. The myth.

Pauline Baines passing

Postby Adam Linton » 02 Aug 2008, 23:17

I don't have details, but I just heard that Pauline Baines, illustrator for both Lewis and Tolkien, passed away a few days ago. I beleive that she was 89.

Pauline Baynes is 86...I just did a search, and haven't found any mention of her death. Are you sure about this, Adam?

Neither the BBC Online, the (London) Times, or her hometown newspaper (the Surrey Comet) mentions her passing. The only thing I could find is a posting in a Tolkien forum that said "so-and-so emailed so-and-so saying...".
Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
Then the two animals, crouching to the earth, bowed their heads and did worship.

The first "somebody" is Wayne Hammond, who, in partnership with his wife Christina Scull, is a major Tolkien scholar. They have known Pauline Baynes for many years.

And no, so far no obits.

I was just passing this on and googling for the possibility of more detail, when I discovered Alexander Solzhenitzyn has just died as well.

Not meaning to hijack the thread. Sad to hear of both these passings.

Just listening to Vechnaya Pamyat' (Memory Eternal) being sung for someone you love can bring tears to your eyes. My priest sang a limited Вечная память for my father, although he was Catholic (doing what could be done for non-Orthodox) with several choir members singing the choir parts, and the tears just started flowing. I never imagined that that was how I would be saying farewell to my father, overseas and not present for his death/funeral.

Anyway, point is that it is a powerful experience. Memory Eternal to them both!

Rus, I can only begin to imagine what you felt. It's moving enough when it's somebody you don't know particularly well.

Sadly, this is the first I heard that she'd passed. I think I may have assumed she'd died long ago, actually, but realizing now that she passed away as recently as August makes me wish I had been paying better attention.
