Pauline Baines passing

Postby Adam Linton » August 2nd, 2008, 11:17 pm

I don't have details, but I just heard that Pauline Baines, illustrator for both Lewis and Tolkien, passed away a few days ago. I beleive that she was 89.
we have not loosely through silence permitted things to pass away as in a dream

Pauline Baynes is 86...I just did a search, and haven't found any mention of her death. Are you sure about this, Adam?

Neither the BBC Online, the (London) Times, or her hometown newspaper (the Surrey Comet) mentions her passing. The only thing I could find is a posting in a Tolkien forum that said "so-and-so emailed so-and-so saying...".
Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
Then the two animals, crouching to the earth, bowed their heads and did worship.

The first "somebody" is Wayne Hammond, who, in partnership with his wife Christina Scull, is a major Tolkien scholar. They have known Pauline Baynes for many years.

And no, so far no obits.

I was just passing this on and googling for the possibility of more detail, when I discovered Alexander Solzhenitzyn has just died as well.

Not meaning to hijack the thread. Sad to hear of both these passings.
