…on a night of rain Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water. And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a fair green country under a swift sunrise.

No wonder I have been confused! The set of books I can get my hands on (not mine, but where I work) is numbered like you want them.

1- LWW
2- PC
3- VDT
4- SC
5- HHB
6- MN
7- LB

When I arrange them in the 2456317 order it doesn't make any sense. You would end up reading LWW second to last. Anyway, there is an edition that does it the way you want, it is the Collier Books, 1978 edition (good luck.) Anyway, I can't remember the order we read them is, but I think it was the 2456317 order, because I know we read LWW first. It never made much sense for me to read MN first, because the joy of a creation story is that what is being created is familiar and already exists. This is the natural order: a person is born into the world and becomes familar with it before they learn how it came to be.

Pax vobiscum,

Sarah

May I suggest... *pulls out graphing calculator*

...Random Order!

3: The Horse and His Boy
1: The Magician's Nephew
4: Prince Caspian
6: The Silver Chair
5: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
2: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
7: The Last Battle

...For a most unusual reading experience.

Seriously, though, I'm all for publication order. May I join the 2456317 club? :)

Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
Then the two animals, crouching to the earth, bowed their heads and did worship.
