Well, George, I wouldn't call it "dumb" in the normal sense of the word. I mean, its realistic that a Faun from another world would not know how to shake hands (and I doubt the influence of the original king and queen of Narnia would last that long ;) ). However, there can be instances of dumbing down (like someone slipping, as you said) so lets just hope they did not "dumb" it down with "clever" jokes.

Actually that little exchange is quite clever - it shows us that Lucy is a well-brought up child of her time (1940) who knows that it is polite to shake hands when introduced. But she has no idea why, and until this point hasn't even considered why you do certain things. It's just a little touch of who she is and her social background.
