Atonement Theology in Narnia

Postby Paul F. Ford » December 10th, 2005, 6:35 pm

In preparation for a review I have been asked to write, I have seen The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe twice in the last twenty-four hours.

It is a splendid film, better on the second seeing even than on the first.

However, by mentioning only the “Deep Magic” and deleting the “Deeper Magic,” the screenplay adjusts Lewis’s atonement theology in the direction of the medieval “paying the debt to the devil” atonement theories.

Since atonement theology is not my speciality, I have been wracking my aging brain for the Latin phrase or its English translation that sums up this “devil’s debt” theology.

Any help on this list for me?

Gratefully,
Paul
