She hoped to be wise and reasonable in time; but alas! alas! she must confess to herself that she was not wise yet. ~ Jane Austen, Persuasion

…on a night of rain Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water. And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a fair green country under a swift sunrise.

Anderson?

Esther, I think you mean Adamson. Stanley didn't make this film, honest! (it would have been quite different if he had).

I've got two responses to this thread:

1. Re the sewing machine - it was in the set, you just didn't get to see it. They did a very intricate set in the Tumnus and Beaver houses, and if you get to watch it with the film-maker commentaries, you can hear Roger Ford talk about it. The kids also talked about some of these aspects "was this made for the audience or for us?"

2. Re the Deep & Deper Magic: Near the end of the film-makers' commentary, you can hear Adamson talk about how he was concerned that the Deeper Magic part could just be nyanyanaya.... (silly witch who didn't know something) .... but after Doug Gresham talked about it to him, it made sense. That it was about the meaning of sacrifice: it wasn't like cutting the throat of an animal and offering it on an altar, but giving up of one's own life, that sort of sacrifice, which the witch had no understanding of. [I guess I'd call it selfless love. ] With that understanding, he was able to make those Stone Table scenes.

“First they came for Abdul Rahman and I spoke out because I was a Muslim. Then they came for the Palestinians and I raised hell because I was a Jew. Then they came for the Iraqis and I protested because I was an American. Then they came for the Muslims and I spoke out because I was a Christian, Then they came for the poor and I spoke out because I was rich. By the time they came for me, I had all the support a man could ask for.”
