Illustration in VDT

Postby Carrie » April 21st, 2006, 2:22 am

Every spring I reread CoN. Today I was reading The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and noticed something peculiar in one of Pauline Byne's illustrations. When Caspian, Lord Bern, and Caspian's "army" are marching into Narrowhaven to confront Governor Gumpas, the illustration shows Lucy, Edward, and Eustace walking with Caspian. However, at this point in the story they are in the posession of Pug, the slave trader. Therefore, they should not be in the illustration. Has anyone else noticed this or any other of Pauline Byne's illustrations that are incorrect with the facts of the story?

I think someone pointed that out a few years ago. It's one of those wee "oops!" moments, - it shows nobody is perfect!
The Chronicles have lots of wee inconsistencies - but somehow I think it makes them all the more charming, like tales told by a favourite uncle.

When Reepicheep prepares to depart for Aslan's land in his coracle, he throws away his sword and says, "I shan't be needing this." In The Last Battle when the children are going further up and further into Aslan's land, they meet Reepicheep, and in the illustration, which heads a chapter, he is wearing his sword.
