Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
Then the two animals, crouching to the earth, bowed their heads and did worship.

Ive been thinking about this (my apologies if its been mentioned before), but has anyone ever noticed there is a 2456317 club but not a 1234567 club?

I think that answers your question Pete.

Well, and that's a point that was bantered around a lot too. Obviously, once you've read the series, the order you read them in from then on is pretty moot. I prefer to read them in order when I have a chance to do so, but with players on the MUCK always nagging me about details I'm pretty much grabbing MN, LWW and HHB on a regular basis and neglecting the others.

I suppose it's really more a question of: how you believe the series should be introduced to someone who has never read them before? In that case, the issue is whether you see anything wrong with someone new to the series reading MN first, as opposed to LWW. I just don't feel MN carries itself well as an introductory book, frankly. As a prequel, it's much, much more interesting.

At least we can all agree that Last Battle should be read last. ;)

Yay, Wix is back! I've missed that adorable avatar.
People flock in, nevertheless, in search of answers to those questions only librarians are considered to be able to answer, such as "Is this the laundry?" "How do you spell surreptitious?" and, on a regular basis, "Do you have a book I remember reading once? It had a red cover and it turned out they were twins." ~Terry Pratchett, about libraries
And we shall reach zero at some point. :)

Without my friends or cousins, I don't make sense. Life would be somewhere not worth my time.

Well, I for one, am not going to jump on your opinion, Linda. I'm going to thank you for sharing that. You might be surprised to know, that although my favourite order now is the published order, I am a staunch defender of the chronological order as a legitimate order to read it in - mainly due to the fact that I myself originally read it in that order, and as I said (above), read it that way pretty much every time since until the most recent time I read it (last year).

So anyway, I respect the fact that you read it in the chronological order and am impressed with your willingness to acknowledge that, even at the risk of being "jumped on".

I don't have a strong objection to reading them in either sequence. But it does seem a little strange to me that Prince Caspian: The Return to Narnia is Volume 4 in my set-- it would seem like that would be a title for Volume 2. I remember that years ago my college professor recommended reading them in the published order because of introducing the important concepts (e.g. redemption, salvation, forgiveness) in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe first. He felt that was less important than the order of events-- in spite of the series' title Chronicles of Narnia and Lewis' recommended chronological order. I think he was right about the advantages in the reader's understanding of those concepts-- it is better to be exposed to them at the beginning. But if you want the events to unfold like Narnian history you can try reading them the other way. Or you can simply refer to an outline of Narnian history while reading them in the published order. Then you won't be confused about what happened when. There are more than enough reference books to refresh your memory on people, times, and places in Narnia.
