Digory and the Apple

Postby zevonfan88 » July 26th, 2006, 5:03 pm

Many readers know that Digory taking the apple and being tempted by Jadis was similar to the Garden of Eden. In the space triliogy C.S. Lewis again portrays the tempting of Eve. He even refrences it in the argument between Satan and Ransom.

Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
Then the two animals, crouching to the earth, bowed their heads and did worship.

I've always thought the Un-man wasn't Satan in the strictest sense of the word... true, he was a bent eldil, but he wasn't the bent Oyarsa of Tellus. So... not Satan, just a devil. Maybe... or maybe I'm just not reading into it enough.

He tells the un man that he tried this on his planet. Satan tempted Eve on Ransoms planet. So Satan is the un man.

True; but Satan is also a liar. He could've been exaggerating simply because he was trying to intimidate Ransom as much as possible. A stretch, I know, but it has a chance...

Also, since Ransom killed Weston/Un-man, wouldn't that mean that the bent Oyarsa was defeated? Since he had no other body to occupy, and thus, no way to get home?

The Un-Man says, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabacthani" to Ransom and Ransom realizes he is hearing perfect Aramaic. In other words, this spirit is reciting the very words he heard Jesus say on the cross. This leads me to believe that Weston is possessed by the Devil himself, since it was the Devil who was the chief spirit operative in the crucifixion.

And it may shed a bit more light on it when you consider that Perelandra was written quite a few years earlier than TMN (and of course for adults).
