I think with Eowyn and Orual it might have been a necessity for them to fight, but it wasn't seen as a desirable thing, even though they were brave and of good moral character. It was a situation they were forced into. In The Last Battle Jill shot some arrows at the Calormenes. And Susan was also pretty good at archery-- she was often shown carrying her bow and arrows. But for her it was more of a sport, and she was not a warrior in the same sense as Peter and Edmund. Aslan did not want Lucy in the battle because he wanted to avoid having women fight wherever possible, although even his magic could not always prevent that situation from happening. So I guess having women fight was viewed as a necessary evil, and having children do it might seen as equally controversial by some even when they are on the morally good side. Susan, Lucy, and Jill were children when they entered Narnia as were Peter, Edmund, and Eustace. One wonders if children should fight adult battles-- it is certainly not desirable. But of course, good must always defeat evil, which may require extreme measures, something very essential in Narnia.

I guess what bothers me is attempts to rewrite history or to imply that people of the past were dark, ignorant and backwards for holding views different from those popular today. The snobbish assumption is that because we live in this time, we are better or more 'enlightened', and this assumption cheerfully co-exists with pessimism over how awful things are in the world.
We see rewriting of history in all the fake historical TV series they run, from westerns to Hercules-type stuff, where women and men are portrayed in ways popular to modern thinking, but historically totally off-base. In Disney's Aladdin, where a girl in medieval Saudi Arabia is talking like a 20th-century suffragette. Etc...

Esther's point is good and true. The deletion referred to above is an example of changing not only text, but also white-washing historical attitudes to please modern (aka temporary) perceptions.
