Those are some good cover ideas.

Too bad we can't get covers done by Bob Pepper. Here is a cover by him for Lord Dunsany's King of Elfland's Daughter, one of my favourite all-time fantasy book covers (this is from the Ballantine Adult Fantasy -- no, no, not that kind -- paperback series back in the early 70's. The image wrapped all around the front, spine, and back of the book, thus the wide-screen appearance):

(apparently using the imgred technique of displaying images here will cause the image to be deleted after a week, so see it while you can.)

For me his style has just the right mix of stylized abstraction and realism and wonderful "sixties" brilliant colour without getting too over-the-top-psychedelic

…on a night of rain Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water. And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a fair green country under a swift sunrise.
