Do you own a copy of the Narnia Cookbook?

Yes! I got it when it was still in print, for around the retail price.

No. I wish I did have it, but I'm not about to pay what it would cost nowadays.

No. I wish I did have it, and will probably get it one of these days, even though it costs quite a bit. It's a collector's item, after all.

Do you own the Narnia Cookbook?

Postby john » 25 Jan 2008, 21:11

Just curious about something.

In 1998, HarperCollins published the Narnia Cookbook, which I bought. It's a wonderful book, with some fantastic color illustrations, and I consider it one of my few Narnia-related treasures.

On a whim, I went searching to see how much a copy costs now, and it seems you'd be pretty hard pressed to find it for less than $150.

I'm wondering if anybody else owns this book.

I don't have it. It's on my list to pick up if I ever run across it in a used bookstore for under $20, which is all I'd be willing to pay for it. (I keep a list in the car and by the computer of books I'd like and the max I'm willing to pay for them.)
Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
Then the two animals, crouching to the earth, bowed their heads and did worship.

Never heard of it. Were all the illustrations new for this book? I see that Pauline Baynes did the illustrations, but the cover doesn't look like anything from the original LWW drawings.

I wonder, though, what Lewis would have thought of such a spin-off.

Somehow I don't think Lewis would have minded, after all, he himself included a lot of delicious food in the Narnia books! :toothy-grin: There's also the factor that it's not something that would easily take people away from the Narnia books.

By the way, I think you'll find it came out just over 9 years ago, in the lead up to 100th anniversary of Lewis's birth. :pleased:

You can somehow get it here for $16.95 (NARNIA COOKBOOK)??? That's what my eyes see anyway...

Click on "add to wish list". Below are other vendors and pricings...
Today I went to IKEA and hid in the wardrobes, and every time someone opened the doors I welcomed them to Narnia!!

heh, that's the 'list price'. If you click on the connections, you'll see it is listed as out of stock, but that they will sell it used for $150.00+.

Yeah, it contains newly-colored illustrations by Pauline Baynes, and Doug Gresham wrote all the introductions to each recipe. It's very well put together, and captures the essence of Narnia with every recipe.

All I can say is that I am truly happy to have this book.

What kinds of recipes does it have in it? I'm guessing it goes beyond Turkish Delight?

From the publisher: "Find out what was in the irresistible Turkish Delight that Edmund found so tempting. Discover how Mr. Tumnus prepared the sugar-topped cake that Lucy found so scrumptious. The Narnia Cookbook is a celebration of the many wonderful dishes described in C. S. Lewis's beloved The Chronicles of Narnia. From chestnut stuffing to Lucy's roast apples, this book is brimming with wonderful recipes. Introductions to each recipe and stories linking each dish to the Chronicles themselves are written by Lewis's stepson, Douglas Gresham."

By the way, there's currently a copy being auctioned on ebay...bid is at $76, which is probably the cheapest I've seen it in a long while.

I would love a copy of this book. I've never seen it below £80 or so from booksellers/eBay sellers, though. It sounds fantastic. Mind, if I used it as a recipe book, it would be covered in gunk and flour and kitchen whatever in no time...have you tried out any of the recipes in it, John?

Photocopy the recipes that look the most tempting and use them in the kitchen, rather than the original. (No copyright infringement here, I don't think, since you already purchased the book and aren't distributing to others.)

Just remember, you don't own the book; you've only purchased a license for it's use.

And risk bending out the spine while pushing it flat on the copier? It's a $150 book! :stunned:
