They're certainly no worse then the Tarzan books I read as a child. And as I remember, people criticized Edgar Rice Burroughs' books for not being good literature. They were about as popular as Harry Potter is now. I enjoyed them (read all of Tarzan and most of John Carter of Mars) but I always thought Lewis was better. Perhaps it's the same with Harry Potter-- maybe not great as literature but fine as entertainment.

Sometimes it almost seems like the anti-Harry Potter people are conducting a witch hunt. During the Salem witch trials people were even hanged who were suspected of witchcraft. I don't think it would ever go that far, but a few years ago there was a old woman in our church who wanted the Narnia books pulled out because they contained magic. She became very angry when I told her that I thought her ideas were a little strange. But the books are still there and later she didn't bring the subject of magic and Narnia up again-- at least she didn't discuss it anymore with me. It did seem something like a witch hunt at the time.
