Hi Shannon.

The books don't really specify the mechanics of the children returning to being children when they come back through the wardrobe. It has to do, however, with the difference in time between our world and Narnia. Remember when Lucy first got to Narnia and was there the whole afternoon with Tumnus but when she came back hardly any time at all had passed in our world? The same thing happened when the children came back after spending years and years as kings and queens in Narnia, only Lewis didn't really explain or describe the transformation, aside from writing "they were no longer Kings and Queens in their hunting array but just Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy in their old clothes."

Wiki has an entire article dealing with the differences in time between Narnia and our earth.
places all the events side by side in a timeline.

However, in the end... the only explanation we really have is, "It is magic!"
