I THINK that's when Pippin has just looked into the Palantir and been whisked away on Shadowfax by Gandalf and they are busy heading for Minas Tirith?

Correct Jo. It's the first sentence in Book 5. How about a quote?

- Dan -
"Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that." - Martin Luther King

Ah yes, Samwise the Elf-Warrior on his way to rescue Frodo in the Tower of Cirith Ungol.

New quote:

We were wet, cold, and hungry, but all that you have cured.
"What are you laughing at?"
"At myself. My little puny self," said Phillipa.

This is Gandalf to Butterbur in RK Ch. VII "Homeward Bound". He's about to ask for pipeweed.

Now another:

Well, since it looks as though nobody else is doing this one, I'll give the answer. It's Fellowship Bk I Ch. VIII "Fog on the Barrow-downs" - Frodo briefly imagining escaping from the barrow but abandoning his companions.

Now try this:

Brambles trailed upon the ground, or clambering over bush and bank, made shaggy caves where small beasts housed

Alas, no. It's much later, and in a much less pleasant place. In case it helps a little, I'll continue the quotation:

No trees grew there; but among the rank grasses could still be seen the burned and axe-hewn stumps of ancient groves.

I presume it is Frodo and Sam on the way to Mordor but that's prolly not specific enough for me to be 'right' I think. Anyone else? :)

It's in TTT, in 'The Road to Isengard', when Merry, Pippin, Aragorn, Gandalf, Legolas, Gimli, Theoden, Eomer, etc. arrive there following the Battle of Helm's Deep.

new quote:

'It would comfort us to know that others fought also with all the means that they have.'
"What are you laughing at?"
"At myself. My little puny self," said Phillipa.

That's Sam on the Great River, shortly after the company had left Lothlorien.

New quote:

'For it is perilous for mortal men to walk out of the world of this Sun, and few of old came thence unchanged, 'tis said.'
"What are you laughing at?"
"At myself. My little puny self," said Phillipa.
