Interesting quotes, Adam. I've never read the Histories, but I'll have to delve into them one day.
One has to wonder what more Tolkien would have written had humanity been granted a longer life-span. Although he never does write about religion in Middle-earth, there are very subtle undertones throughout all his works, just b/c of the predominance of (I hate to say religion so I'll say) a relationship with God in his life.
If God is in your life, He spills over a little into everything.
But I do agree with you that it doesn't do to draw too many conclusions or to attribute every virtue or sin to a religious background.
