I read that link you gave us, Jimbo, and started crying. I can't imagine the horror of those trenches. Well, no, actually, I'm crying b/c I can imagine that horror. What I really mean is that I can't fully realize it, of course.
I had never thought before of the connection between the pits in No-Man's Land and the Dead Marshes. The picture shows a striking similarity. I don't think I'll ever read those chapters the same way again.
I fully agree about the move from Philia to Agape in Sam and Frodo's relationship. Tolkien's understanding of God comes out through his writing at every turn.
