Maugrim or Fenris Ulf?

Postby senotsidnar » January 20th, 2005, 12:25 am

I'm sorry if this topic has been discussed before, but does anyone know why Fenris Ulf's name is changed to Maugrim in some of the later editions of LLW? Does anyone know which name they will use in the film?

Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
Then the two animals, crouching to the earth, bowed their heads and did worship.

Sven has given a masterful answer (one with which I totally agree) and covers all the research I have been able to do on the same questions.

I had no idea that the American edition was so different from the British - I'd better read it. I have the 1962 Penguin edition. Incidentally, Prince Caspian is the one I happen to have at my desk at the moment, and as I checked the publication date, my eye caught a note saying "... and the correct reading order is" followed by the titles in published order (of course!)
"What are you laughing at?"
"At myself. My little puny self," said Phillipa.

are a lot of books changed when they get published over here, or was this just a choice of Lewis's?

Yes - Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was changed to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

I believe the reason was that the publishers didn't think American readers would understand what a Philosopher's Stone was!

I'd be highly offended if I were you ;)

…on a night of rain Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water. And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a fair green country under a swift sunrise.
