Pevensey Castle

I just read that Pevensey Castle in Sussex was Lewis' inspiration for Cair Paravel. Has anyone visited it?

Read where?
Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
Then the two animals, crouching to the earth, bowed their heads and did worship.

It doesn't look anything like Pauline Baynes' illustrations.

Someone who lives in Sussex - perhaps it is local knowledge. Lewis did walk through Sussex.

Well, no, you wouldn't expect to see a fairy tale castle built by Romans. THe inspiration may come from its' overlooking the sea.

Pevensey Castle immediately makes me think of Kipling... We listened to Puck of Pook's Hill on tape last year. The book is set in Sussex and Pevensey Castle figures in several of the historical flashbacks. I remember wondering about the similarity with the surname of Lucy, Peter et al.

Have I been there? Wouldn't that be lovely? Reminds me of another book, How the Heather Looks, about a family who toured Britain with the express purpose of seeing places referred to in their favorite books. I can't remember if they made it to Pevensey.

In grace,
Colleen

The connection with Lewis may be a local legend - I was hoping that someone who had been there might have been able to give more info, maybe from a tour guide or talking with a local person. Oh well - I'll just have to go there myself. :)
