Still, the fact that they were actually able to get drunk off the wine speaks for the abundance of the meal. It would be hard for 50 people to get drunk off 2 goblets of wine.

It is clear from reading 1 Corinthians 11:17-33 that Paul is reprimanding those who get drunk, and those who stuff themselves at the Lord's Supper, for that was not why it was instituted. He says that you can eat and drink at home, but the Lord's Supper is special, and it does not suite the dignity of it to treat it as an all you can eat buffet.
