Well, it was obviously a mammal and was obviously a primate - that's kind of the point.

The danger is that throwing around phrases like "man descended from the apes" gives rise to the erroneous idea that man descended from modern apes such as gorillas or orang-utans which is untrue and creates all kinds of misunderstandgins from those who believe the half truths.

The common ancestor of all primates, including apes, monkeys and humans probably looked something like this.
