on the giggling thing (since that's what most people caught) i never stated that it was right. i don't even think it is right. but often it is more of a giggle that says, "oh, poor guy, he didn't know." we feel bad for the person for looking so out of place, in a sense of awkward mercy/ compassion (for lack of a better word). it doesn't prevent anyone from talking to them. we have perfectly fine conversations with people of whatever dress (excepting naked and distractingly nearly naked).
i could do more to defend my iconoclasm, but i do think they are minor differences as long as they are recognized as the same thing as the meat-eating regulations between believers in corinth and rome. some are incapable of relating to God without certain things. i'll allow for that. there was once when a speaker came to my church and didn't end his talk with a prayer. i didn't quite know what to do with that. it's a very similar sort of issue. as long as the brotherhood of the saints is recognized holy spaces is not something to get worked up over (which i know can be my habit).
