Oh, I quite expected authentic copies of his novels to be scarce over there, kellidra-in fact I'm amazed you managed to find even one. I have mixed feelings about MacDonald's popularity in America because while it's great that he's appreciated, the whole flavour of his books (at least the ones set in Morayshire) would be completely destroyed without the North-East dialect. His sermons and childern's books, which are written in English, manage to avoid this problem.

[quote="Adam Linton"]Rhoop67,

Is this the article you mentioned? (I tried to follow your instructions; hope that I got them right.)

That's the one, Adam. Thanks very much indeed. I love what Lorimer has to say, it's beautifully eloquent and honest. Somehow you can sense his plain and humble affection for his Lord more (I think) in the Scots, with phrases like ' the dear Maister' and ' the better knowledge o' a Blessed Saviour.' Really lovely and completely genuine.

Hmmm... I was mistaken. I do not own Sir Gibbie, but Donal Grant. I believe I borrowed the unabridged Sir Gibbie from the library once upon a time.

I also have, and had forgotten purchasing, a copy of The Seaboard Parish, which dates to the 1870s. I bought it in 1989 for $45.00.

I sought out the books of George MacDonald when I was looking to branch out in my reading... C.S. Lewis recommended him in his own writing, so I decided to give him a try. I first read the abridged versions, as it was all I could find. But they did not satisfy... they gave me a glimpse of how wonderful his writing was, but only a glimpse. So I had to look for the real thing, and I was able to find a few.

As for the Gospels in Scots, I enjoyed looking at the link and listening to the Sermon on the Mount. I can imagine Christ saying it just that way.

Well I finally got around to buying Lorimer's New Testament in Scots, having resisted for far too long. I'm hoping that it will help to renew my hunger for reading the word and be of value to my devotional life.
Curiously, I then came across a copy of George MacDonald's 'Robert Falconer' so I decided I had to buy that too before I closed up my wallet and allowed the cobwebs to gather for another year or so.
Hopefully, I shall now be absorbing much holiness through the scots tongue :grin:
"This is and has been the Father’s work from the beginning-to bring us into the home of His heart.” George MacDonald.

Except for Hebrew, there's no language more beautiful and closer to God than Gaelic.
