Caspian's name

Postby bingley » February 25th, 2006, 8:24 am

Perhaps this has been asked before, but I was wondering while re-reading Prince Caspian and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader whether there was any connection between Caspian's name and the Caspian Sea? Did Lewis just like the sound of the name, was there supposed to be some subtle connection, or was he not thinking of the sea at all?

Rat! he found breath to whisper, shaking. Are you afraid?
Afraid? murmured the Rat, his eyes shining with unutterable love.
Afraid! Of Him? O, never, never! And yet -- and yet -- O, Mole, I am afraid!
Then the two animals, crouching to the earth, bowed their heads and did worship.

"What are you laughing at?"
"At myself. My little puny self," said Phillipa.

Also, the Telmarines had apparently been in that world for at least a couple of generations (in the inhospitable western mountains or beyond them) before their invasion of Narnia. And as to piracy on the Caspian Sea--- well, as it's relatively small and absolutely landlocked, there's not really enough shipping lanes to properly support a proper piracy industry. The Pacific is much more likely: I think Lewis just grabbed the name off of a map.

Yeah, the pirates would have to be awfully lost to get from the Caspian Sea to some small island in the ocean.

I wouldn't thinl they could find very much to plunder at that time in Narnia history. When they first arrived, of course.

Oh and welcome Prince Caspian. I guess you just joined.
