I voted for Maugrim, for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I think Maugrim sounds (as has already been said) strong, cold and evil, and in fact, in my opinion, much stronger and eviler than "Fenris Ulf".

To me, Fenris Ulf sounds weak and nothing to be the least bit concerned about, after all, one kick in the side and he'd go off yelping to the White Witch.

I must admit, a lot of the reason I prefer the name Maugrim is because, here in Australia we tend to stick with the English versions of books rather than American (which I'm glad of) and thus, I hadn't heard of Maugrim's other name until I ventured into the Wardrobe (several years ago). I heard the American name used in the animated version of LW&W and wasn't at all convinced...

No one has answered the real question - WHY did MacMillan (or whoever published CON in the US) change the name?? What gave them the right? Did someone have any squirrelly idea that Maugrim might be offensive and get permission from Lewis to change the name? Where did this decision come from and who authorized it?
(I'm irritated because I grew up with F.U. and Sir Peter, Fenris-Bane.) I see no reason to have changed the name in the first place.

I think it was Lewis & the publishers together who made that decision. By the way, I don't think you'll find that was the question of this topic though. The question of the topic is which do you prefer. ;)

Fenris-bane is MUCH better than Wolf's-bane, and not just because I grew up with that one. I love the Nordic myths reference, and "Maugrim" just sounds corny. I prefer to follow the author's intents in revisions, so it's "Fenris Ulf" and the Silmarillion, and "Maugrim" and the books of Lost Tales are the apocryphal versions. My tuppence.

Well, in the current naval definition, a galley isn't a type of vessel, but the kitchen aboard ship. Therefore, a 'galley prof' might really be just an MSC (mess specialist, chief) who is instructing seamen on their cooking.
"...If I am inclined to doubt, steady my faith; if I am tempted, make me strong to resist; if I should miss the mark, give me courage to try again. Guide me with the light of truth and keep before me the life of Him by whose example and help I trust to obtain the answer to my prayer, Jesus Christ, our Lord, Amen."
