"in the right hands"... thats the key point :/

I have this dread fear that if it should be thought of by those who make the filming decisions, instead of being a subtle music "underlay" to the main theme, it'd turn out to be something akin to a jack-hammer smashes open a walnut.. overkill!

But then, as well as being a Heretic, I'm also a pessimist ho hum

…on a night of rain Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water. And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a fair green country under a swift sunrise.

Hmm - you've got me intrigued now - it doesn't sound quite like an oboe - oboes are usually reedier, more of a spiteful sound.

But it also doesn't sound like a clarinet, which is more mellow.

Well, I asked the question in a muso forum and they think it's a cor anglais. Apparently it goes too low to be an oboe (I'm not a windie so I don't know this stuff!)

I actually thought maybe it was that too but was too chicken to put in case I was wrong. :D

So nearly an oboe.
