magic doubled is magic erased?

Postby Monica » January 3rd, 2006, 2:58 pm

Solomon's Song wrote:

Maybe the problem goes beyond HOW the book should have been portrayed to WHETHER or not the book should have been portrayed. Remember Tokien's words: "Fantasy is not well illustrated in pantomime. The nearer it is to dramatized the worse it is." Tolkien warns that drama is already attempting a kind of 'magic' by making actors portray imaginary characters. To take the next step and introduce 'fantastic' elements is to add another magic wand to the magician's magic wand.

Perhaps magic doubled is magic erased.

…on a night of rain Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water. And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a fair green country under a swift sunrise.
