Linda, would you agree that watching "East Enders" is a good way to hear a decent cockney accent? (I won't ask you about Ray Winstone as Mr Beaver's voice, as you haven't heard him yet, but he's pretty good too).

It was Cockney rhyming slang - it's not meant to make sense.

But it does explain to those who might otherwise have wondered forever where expressions such as 'bread' for money (bread and honey) come from.

Possibly even the American 'dough' derives form the London 'bread' - it wouldn't surprise me.

:/ Wow. I guessed that dickory related to time, but the rest of it is like a peculiar language that SOUNDS like English but has an entirely different grammar and meaning to its vocabulary!! (fascinating, Captain) :lol:

Today I went to IKEA and hid in the wardrobes, and every time someone opened the doors I welcomed them to Narnia!!
