What about Pauline Baynes?

Postby Baynesman » January 4th, 2006, 11:40 pm

I've now seen the film, and thought that, overall, it did a good job.

Most things looked suitable Narnian, and I was particulary impressed with the "look" of the encampments.

For me, a large part of the appeal of the books has always been the illustrations by Pauline Baynes. In fact, I admire her work so much that I have been collecting various books she has graced and to my surprise and delightm was able to buy some of the original works from Prince Caspian.

I am aware that she is an intensely private person, but I did feel that her input would have further enhanced the film. I do not think she was consulted, or if she was even approached.

Am I alone in feeling that she does not really get the recognition she deserves for shaping our minds' eye view of Narnia?

Regards

Mike

Pauline Baynes is 83.
"What are you laughing at?"
"At myself. My little puny self," said Phillipa.

I would love to have the new Narnia publication with the color renderings of her work in it. But alas...

Pictures of her are rare. Here's the only one I could find online. I have no idea how old this picture is.

"Jill," said Tirian, "you are the bravest and most wood-wise of all my subjects, but also the most malapert and disobedient."
"By the Mane!" he whispered to Eustace. "This girl is a wondrous wood-maid. If she had Dryad's blood in her she could scarce do it better." - The Last Battle

"Well," said Pooh, "what I like best -- " and then he had to stop and think. Because although Eating Honey was a very good thing to do, there was a moment just before you began to eat it which was better than when you were, but he didn't know what it was called.

Wow! That's incredible. What a great collection it must be.

For a heads up on other pictures of Pauline Baynes . . . .there is one of her and Douglas Gresham in the multimedia/pictures section of this site. I also have a copy of : C.S. Lewis: Images of His World by Gilbert and Kilby. There is a great shot of her when she seemed to be in her late '20's or early '30's in that book. Additionally there is a quote from a letter that Lewis sent to her, commenting on how the illustrations grew in quality with each successive book.

Then said Littleheart son of Bronweg: "Alas for Gondolin."
And no one in the Room of Logs spake or moved for a great while.
Pro published order! Poster of The Wardrobe's 40,000th post. That earns no merit, but I feel pretty cool about it anyway.
