Women have not been involved in fighting wars and battles in Europe. In WW2, it was men who fought, and women who did support work or filled in as workers back home when men went off to war.
It is generally considered that it makes the battle much worse when women have to be involved - their job is meant to be nurture, healing, etc - the positive things of life. Women in the 1940s were also still seen as the gentler sex, who did not or should not fight. After WW2 there was a major push to encourage women to accept their domestic roles again.
